Am I Experiencing Anxiety?

Anxiety is a mental disorder that alters an individual’s ability to think constructively and act cohesively upon their feelings. For those with mild anxiety, this may present itself through overthinking, physical ailments, and isolating themselves. Anxiety attacks happen when an individual feels a loss of control over their breathing, heart rate, and thoughts. This can lead to them overworking their fight or flight reflexes as they navigate both through mental and physical obstacles to calm themselves down.

There is not a single symptom that can diagnose anxiety, but rather an accumulation of habits and behaviours that can identify how this disorder shows up and inhabits their lives.

Below are symptoms to look out for when considering an anxiety diagnosis:

● Shifting away from friends, family, and support
● Constantly on alert for any upcoming danger, even when no threat is present
● Avoiding things that trigger any anxiety attacks
● Difficulty breathing, physical pain, and increased heart rate when faced with obstacles
● Dissociative patterns like mind wandering, losing focus, and daydreaming
● Overthinking even the smallest decisions, actions, and words
● Feeling exhausted after outing events due to relying on the fight or flight response
● Immediate and extreme changes in diet or sleeping patterns

How Can Therapy Help Me?

Therapy can be a positive solution for those who find themselves lost in their anxiety.

Healing from what has caused you pain can become increasingly difficult with nowhere to turn and seemingly no one who understands your pain. That is why therapy can be used as both a tool and a safe space for exploring what makes your anxiety levels rise. Sessions with a trained mental health professional can provide the guidance needed to overcome what causes those worries and fears.

Like the symptoms, there is no specific way to “cure” anxiety. There are tools to manage it and resources to work through it, but no way to magically remove anxiety from one individual. The importance of finding yourself even in madness cannot be overstated. At my practice, I value the growth of the individual, aiming to help them not just in therapy sessions but in their everyday lives as well. Choosing to attend therapy will give an individual a more detailed look into their lives, emotions, and mental well-being to see where they want to develop further their ability to recognise and tame their anxiety.
