Am I Experiencing Depression?

The impossibility of averting and maneuvering around sadness is something that every individual will have to come to terms with. These varying levels of sadness are what help people grow and understand themselves on deeper levels. However, when an individual is experiencing a depressive episode, additional resources, time, and compassion may be needed to help them move through the sadness and into a more kind and peaceful mental space.

Depression is a mood disorder that can alter an individual’s way of thinking, behaving, and acting within a small amount of time.

It can feel like an overwhelming feeling of despair, loneliness, and confusion. It can be caused by a variety of occurrences but is primarily relevant when an individual is going through tremendous loss or stress. Unlike many disorders that may show physical symptoms, depression maintains itself through the isolation of the individual. That is why diagnosing someone with depression should be handled by a trained mental health professional.

Below are symptoms that can help identify when an individual is suffering from depression:
● Immediate lack of interest in hobbies, occupations, or entertainment
● A drastic change in sleeping or eating patterns
● Isolating oneself from friends, family, partners, and support systems
● Becoming irrational and irritable in short periods
● Physical pain stemming from minimal movement and stress
● Muscle stiffness in the neck, back, and chest caused by lethargy

How can Therapy help me?

For those who live with depression, being vulnerable about what hurts them can feel almost painful, and is typically avoided to sustain the depressive feelings. That is why my practice is determined to provide safe spaces for all clients. I aim to ensure that you can be fully open about the trauma, grief, or sadness that you are experiencing without fear of judgment or criticism. Mental health should always be taken as seriously as physical health, and I value the strength that it takes to show up for ourselves consistently.

Therapy is meant to be the path to comprehending and eventually healing the aspects that can trigger depressive episodes. For some, that looks like accepting their loss and moving forward, and for others, it can look like overcoming their stress and learning to manage their thoughts or emotions better. Depression does not have to be the end of the road for anyone; there is a myriad of ways to conquer and tend to the negative feelings that may hold you  back.
